25th February, 2021 was the first Gray Day, a celebration of the writer and artist Alasdair Gray, on the 40th anniversary of his seminal novel Lanark.
To mark it Canongate published a new hardback edition of Lanark, as well as editions of Unlikely Stories, Mostly, McGrotty and Ludmilla and The Fall of Kelvin Walker.

A special Gray Day Broadcast premiered on the evening of the 25th February. Hosted by Neu Reekie, with The Alasdair Gray Archive and Canongate, and part filmed beneath Alasdair’s Celestial Ceiling mural here at Òran Mór, the broadcast features special guests including Ali Smith, Yann Martel, Denise Mina, Irvine Welsh, Gemma Cairney, Ewen Bremner.
Alasdair Gray’s Lanark: Readings for The Alasdair Gray Archive
Friends, family and admirers of Alasdair Gray have been reading their favourite passages from Lanark.
Rodge Glass, Fran Healy and Rhona Warwick are just some of Alasdair’s admirers who have contributed. We were delighted to take part and Colin Beattie, Òran Mór owner and dear friend to Alasdair, recorded his own reading in tribute.
