Joanne & Jim: St Patrick’s Day Celebrations

Sunday, September 1st, 2019

From the very first time I met Joanne and Jim it was clear to me that we were going to get on like a house on fire. I love working with couples throughout their wedding journey – it’s my favourite part of my job and I can confidently say that by the end of our journey in March 2019 I had a genuinely strong bond with the new Mr & Mrs Wilson. (Hope you’re crying already Joanne :P)

The couple first got in contact in September 2017 at the start of their wedding planning and mentioned that they already really loved the thought of having their wedding reception at Òran Mór after a ceremony along the road at Glasgow University Chapel. They visited the venue and were pretty much sold on the venue straight away but weren’t in a position to confirm a date as they were heading off to Spain for Joanne’s sister’s wedding. The couple attended our Wedding Fayre that October, along with Joanne’s sister, and were keen to book their wedding for March 2019.

Joanne and Jim chose to get married on Saturday the 16th March and wanted to carry on their celebrations into Sunday 17th, St Patrick’s Day.

The couple made sure to attend each Òran Mór Wedding Fayre and booked Rachel Glue from Glu It to dress the venue and Declan Hegarty to welcome their guests into our Auditorium on the guitar on the day of the wedding.

The couple were married at Glasgow University Chapel at 2.00pm on the 16th of March surrounded by all of their friends and family. Joanne and Jim had booked one of Òran Mór’s favourite videographers Jess & Kieran from Cue the Mustard to capture their big day on film.

The couple also booked photographer Ian from Imac Images, who I hadn’t ever met or worked with before. Ian was great to work with and when I received the couple’s pictures less than 2 weeks later when they were on honeymoon, I was completely blown away by his pictures. Ian had captured the couples’ day amazingly, making sure to snap every single point of the day including one of my all-time favourite pictures – a selfie with the priest in the chapel! After the great experience of working with Ian in the venue, I later recommended Imac Images to my cousin and his fiancé who got married a few months later in Òran Mór and much to my excitement, Ian was soon after booked and once again did an amazing job of their photographs too.

Our Auditorium was dressed beautifully with large gold candelabras provided by Make Believe Events in the centre of the tables, accompanied by plenty of tea light holders and green foliage which was dressed by Rachel. Rachel also created a bespoke welcome sign, a table plan for the couple with glass bottles and fairy lights and handwritten tags with each guest’s name and table name and finally a wooden box with a thank you message written personally by the bride and groom to sit on the gift table, which was a lovely touch.

Each guest had a bottle of Jägermeister or Chambord with a personalised Mr & Mrs Wilson tag and a place card. Joanne and Jim also gave each guest a drinks token which allowed them to select a drink of choice during dinner service.

The couple then cut their stunningly quirky, colourful wedding cake, made by Edwina at Rosewood – another familiar face at Òran Mór. Joanne and Jim had popular wedding band The Kicks play their first dance and entertain their guests into the early hours of St Paddy’s day!

Joanne and Jim were an absolute dream to work with on the lead up to their big day. The day before the wedding as they were dropping off their belongings, the couple handed me a thank you card and bottle of fizz which lead to Joanne and I having a ‘moment’ as Joanne broke into tears – which she assured me were happy, extremely happy tears! I swear I saw a tear in Jim’s eye too.

The strangest thing happened the day the couple returned home from their honeymoon. As I was walking into work, on a miserable rainy day, I spotted the new Mr & Mrs Wilson walking along Great Western Road having just arrived back into Glasgow after a luxurious 2 weeks in the Maldives. This is certainly a first for me, seeing a couple so soon after their honeymoon but it was a lovely end to our journey together.
