This year has seen so many couples forced to reduce their wedding guest list to less than a quarter, and make plans to celebrate with a larger group at a later date. The hashtag is #WedNowPartyLater. Marrying in an intimate setting with family and friends is exactly what Melanie and Greg had always planned.
The couple got in contact in March last year, looking to hire our Private Dining Room for a ceremony and wedding breakfast with their nearest and dearest, followed by a larger evening reception in our Auditorium. Melanie and Greg were in Glasgow shortly after they emailed, visiting from their home in Crieff and were in a rush to see Òran Mór as Greg was heading off to Texas for work the following week. The couple fell in love with our space almost instantly and their unique wedding day was set for September that year.
We hosted a Wedding Fayre a couple of weeks later, and although Melanie was unable to attend, she was able to follow the event through our social media that day – thank goodness for technology! On Greg’s return home in the Spring, the couple made the journey back to Glasgow for our first meeting to discuss their plans for the big day.
Booking a wedding celebrant is such a personal and important part of the wedding planning process. Melanie and Greg got in contact with David Smith from the Humanist Society Scotland and knew straight away that he was the perfect person to marry them. David and I worked together years ago, back when David was a wedding coordinator at a popular city centre wedding venue, so it’s always great to catch up, now both in different roles in the wedding industry.
On the 1st of September 2020 Melanie made her way down Great Western Road from a local hotel to our Private Dining Room to marry her soulmate Greg, in a stunning white, off the shoulder dress from Web 2 B Glasgow accompanied by her bridesmaid and daughter Carries who was in a beautiful blush dress from Alison Kirk Bridal. Greg patiently waited at Òran Mór with Mel’s other daughter Ellis, who was dressed in a crisp grey suit from Principles at Debenhams, his groomsmen in kilts from Macgregor and Macduff and the rest of the family.
With many tears of joy and laughter the couple married and could finally celebrate with a glass of fizz with their close family and friends. After spending many months following our Oran Mor Weddings Instagram the couple fell in love with wedding photographer Imac Images and booked Ian to shoot their day. Ian did an exceptional job at capturing the emotion and love in the room at the ceremony and throughout the rest of the couple’s day. As the couple got a beautiful day, they made sure to head over to the Botanic Gardens for some outdoor shots before heading back to join their guests for their wedding breakfast.
Before dinner Greg thanked guests for joining them, followed by Melanie’s daughter Carries who said a few words and toasted the happy couple. Guests each had individual place settings and personalised menus, with four choices for starters, mains and desserts.
At 7pm Melanie and Greg’s evening guests started to arrive through our Bell Tower entrance, where they were welcomed with a glass of fizz and the newlyweds to greet them. After a short drinks reception, Greg’s best man welcomed everyone and kicked the evening off with the best man’s speech followed by the couple cutting their cake which was beautifully made and delivered by 3D Cakes.
The couple chose to use our in-house silver candelabras to dress each table, wrapped in a green artificial ivy. Each guest had an individual alcoholic favour and a jar of sweets for the table. Make Believe Events provided their standard Òran Mór fairy light package, which perfectly set the party atmosphere off in the room.
The Copyrights Wedding Band took to the stage and had Melanie, Greg and their guests dancing their socks off until the early hours of Monday morning.
